Naples, 8th, 9th and 10th December 2017

Having the privilege to row in the Gulf of Naples, is an experience not to be missed.

The atmosphere of Christmas is known to be magical everywhere, but nowhere else is the italian tradition of the manger so well represented as it is in Naples. It has been one of the most heartfelt traditions of the city since the 18th century. During the Immaculate Conception festivity, Rowing4fun takes you back to Naples for a rowing weekend, while experiencing the warmth of the neapolitan Christmas.

Naples is one of the most ancient cities of the west, and like every historical city, its story begins with a myth, which in this case dates back to 3000 years ago, and concerns Ulysses and the mermaids’ chant. It is said that Pertenope the mermaid, mourning Ulysses’s flight, committed suicide. Her adrift body would have then reached the islet of Megaride, where the “Castel dell’Ovo” is located today. “Partenope”, the ancient heart of today’s Naples, would be born from that suicide.

Myth and history are perfectly mixed together in Naples, giving life to one of the most eclectic cities of Italy. Its colours, traditional food, people and sea make it a very unique city. You will have the privilege of rowing in the gulf of Naple, while having a wonderful view from the Vesuvio to Posillipo, from Castel dell’Ovo to the island of Nisida, from Trentaremi bay to Marechiaro. You should definitely not miss this experience!

We will be guests of the historical rowing club “Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia”, founded on the 15th of July 1893. It is one of the most prestigious and decorated rowing clubs of the city. The rowing club “Savoia” is located in the city center, inside the seafaring village, near Castel dell’Ovo, and many of his athletes are distinguished in national and international regattas, between them Matteo Castaldo, bronze medal Olimpic games Rio 2016.

The coach of the rowing club, Pasquale Marigliano, highly decorated ex-Olympian and friend of Rowing4fun, will be joining us. He won a gold medal for sports merit in 1991.

On Saturday afternoon we will experience the neapolitan Christmas tradition, after having rowed in the gulf of Naples. We will discover the traditional characters always represented in the secular handicraft neapolitan tradition of the manger in “San Gregorio Armeno a Spaccanapoli”, one of the most beautiful neapolitan streets, and known all over the world to be the “Manger street”.

In italian there is a saying that goes “Once you’ve seen Naples you can die”, so we would like to suggest our own version of this saying: “Once you’ve seen Naples you can… row!”
