Come join us rowing during the Carnival of Venice!
The Carnival of Venice is certainly one of the most known and appreciated events from all over the world. The period before Lent was officially recognized as a public feast already in 1296 by the Senate of Republic of Venice. As the latin saying goes, "Semel in anno licet insanire" (It is allowed to go crazy once a year), during the Carnival people were allowed to disguise themselves with masks on their faces and mock the established power as they wanted. Thus folks vented their anger and social tensions during the countless street feasts and by doing this the power of the Republic of Venice would not have been in danger.
The Carnival was way longer before. It started on the first Sunday of October and had its climax on the Epiphany. It is then clear why it was of such an importance to the Venetians. Today, the Carnival lasts 10 days, the ones that precede the catholic period of Lent.
The Carnival of Venice starts with two days of festivals on the water, that fascinate thousand of visitors every year. You will be amazed by all the acrobats, jugglers and musician that will perform along the colourful canal of Cannaregio.
